Construction Advisory – Updated July 2023

To ensure continued operations and maintain a state of good repair, major roadway work on the terminal frontage bridges of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) will commence on the evening of March 6, 2023, weather permitting, to repair and replace deteriorating structural components. Work will necessitate the 24/7 closure of one of the three traffic lanes servicing both Terminals B and C (see Figure 1 below).

The Port Authority of NY & NJ understands construction may cause temporary inconvenience and is working closely with the construction contractor to ensure work is completed on time and with Port Authority Police to help keep traffic moving on roadways. Updates related to this construction work will be announced on this webpage.

Construction Schedule

Work will be completed in two stages beginning with the four-month closure of the left most lane of Express Road in front of Building 4. Immediately thereafter, work will begin on the left most lane of Express Road in front of Terminal B. Work completion is expected in November 2023.

Travel Tips During Construction

As construction may result in traffic congestion in the central terminal area, below are some travel tips for travelers to the airport:

• Plan ahead and leave plenty of time to arrive at the airport at least two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international travel.
• Follow detour signs for alternate ways to drop off and pick up passengers at Terminal B to avoid potential congestion on Express Road (see sample signs below)
• Use our FREE Cell Phone Lot Waiting Area. Located less than five minutes away from all terminals and is open 24/7, wait in this free lot until your passenger has collected their luggage before heading to the terminals. This lot can be found on Google Maps by searching “EWR Cell Phone Lot.
• A 30-minute grace period is available in the Short-Term Parking B & C lots for quick drop-offs and pick-ups. Terminal B and C passengers are encouraged to be dropped off or picked up directly inside the B & C lots. These vehicles will not pay a fee if exiting under 30 minutes.
